Damaged or Altered Trusses

Occasionally, a truss will be damaged when it is being delivered or erected.  Contractors also alter trusses to accommodate changes to the structure, and to facilitate the installation of components such as ducts, skylights, or stairs.  Problems can also occur during the manufacturing process such as the use of a split piece of lumber, omitting a connection plate, or failing to adequately embed a plate.  Trusses are engineered to be used in their entirety; therefore, codes and good construction practices do not permit them to be altered unless evaluated and approved by a qualified engineer.  Damage to or the removal of a single member or connection plate can significantly reduce the strength and stiffness of a truss.

Evaluation and Repair Design

Atlanta Structural regularly evaluates damaged and altered trusses.  A registered structural engineer will perform a site inspection of the existing conditions to determine the severity of the damage and to discuss repair options if necessary.  The staff engineer will follow up the inspection with a report of the findings that include detailed recommendations.  Call (770) 973-1611 today to schedule an appointment.
